IBA see developed concepts for the Lausitz lake region that permit new tourism uses and economic opportunities. Model buildings like the IBA Terrassen (IBA Terraces) exemplify the quality standards the new architecture has for the new lake region.
Few cities in the Lower Lausitz region have changed as much in the last 20 years as the former mining city of Großräschen. The southern half of the city was lost almost completely to the mine. And ironically, that is exactly where its future lies – as a city by the lake. This transformation represents the structural change particularly clearly. In 2007, the valves were opened symbolically with many local residents in attendance, and the Meuro pit was flooded. Großräschen Lake has been filling since then. The Lausitz Lake District Visitors’ Centre opened before flooding commenced to provide information on all IBA activities. These IBA Terraces are the result of an international competition to build an Information Centre for IBA see. The buildings and surrounding open spaces of the terraces were designed such that they can still be used after IBA see. This created a memorable venue, a popular destination and lookout point as well as a new landmark by the lake for Großräschen.
